Do not put jewellery in an ultrasonic cleaner simply because it contains gold, silver or a diamond. The gemstone, any treatments, the finish and the condition of the setting all affect whether the complete piece is suitable.
Jewellery to leave out
GIA’s ultrasonic-cleaning guidance identifies important exclusions, including organic gems, fracture-filled stones and several heat-sensitive materials. It also warns that vibration can loosen gems or damage stones whose edges touch.
- Pearls, coral and amber: do not use ultrasonic cleaning.
- Opal, turquoise, tanzanite, topaz and other sensitive gems: leave out; check specialist care instructions.
- Fracture-filled, oiled, waxed or coated stones: cleaning can affect treatments. Emeralds commonly require particular caution.
- Unknown stones or treatments: ask the jeweller before use.
- Loose stones or damaged settings: arrange repair or inspection before any ultrasonic cleaning.
This is an exclusion guide, not an exhaustive list of every gemstone and treatment.
Plating, glue and mixed materials
As a conservative rule for home use, leave out glued decorations, costume jewellery and plated pieces unless their maker expressly permits ultrasonic cleaning. Instructions for one brand or finish do not approve another. A pendant’s chain may be suitable while its decorative element is not.
Can diamonds go in?
Some diamond jewellery may be suitable, but “diamond” is not a guarantee. Treatments, inclusions and the setting must be considered. Have your jeweller confirm the method for the specific piece. If you are unsure, use their recommended alternative rather than experimenting with a short cycle.
How to check before using SONIQ Clean
- Identify the materials and review the original care instructions.
- Ask the jeweller about treatments and whether ultrasonic cleaning is approved.
- Have an uncertain setting examined. Do not press or tap a stone to prove it is secure.
- Follow the appliance manual, including liquid, loading and cycle instructions.
Our loose-stone guide explains when to stop and seek help. Cleaning is not a substitute for a professional setting check.
For pieces confirmed suitable
