Does an ultrasonic cleaner remove silver tarnish?

Do not buy a water-only ultrasonic cleaner expecting it to remove every dark patch from silver. Removing everyday dirt and dealing with tarnish are different tasks. The appropriate treatment depends on the finish, stones and care instructions for the piece.

First identify what you are trying to remove

A dull silver necklace may have surface residue, tarnish or both. It may also have deliberately darkened details. Before reaching for a cleaner, compare it with the original product photographs and check how the maker describes the finish.

Tiffany’s sterling silver guidance distinguishes tarnish from intentionally oxidised decoration and warns that enthusiastic cleaning can remove the latter. It also recommends careful drying and suitable storage after cleaning.

What ultrasonic cleaning is for

Ultrasonic equipment creates cleaning action within a liquid. It removes everyday dirt, oils and residue from accessible surfaces and recesses of compatible jewellery. Water and vibration alone should not be presented as a guaranteed silver-tarnish treatment.

A silver-specific cleaning product may address tarnish, but that does not mean it belongs in an ultrasonic tank. It must be permitted by both the appliance instructions and the jewellery maker. Do not combine dips or household recipes with the machine unless their compatibility is explicitly established.

Choose the next step for your piece

  • Everyday residue: follow the maker’s routine cleaning method. Use an ultrasonic cleaner only if the whole piece is confirmed suitable.
  • Darkening on plain silver: ask whether the maker recommends a particular polishing cloth or cleaner.
  • Darkened decorative details: check whether the contrast is intentional before trying to remove it.
  • Silver with gems, pearls or plating: obtain instructions for the complete piece, rather than applying a plain-silver method.

Where SONIQ Clean fits

SONIQ Clean ultrasonic jewellery cleaner is designed for ultrasonic cleaning of suitable jewellery. It is not a replating service or a substitute for professional polishing. Check which jewellery to keep out of the tank, especially pieces with delicate materials or uncertain treatments.

When comparing results, use the same light before and after. Separate “this looks cleaner” from “this has been polished”: they describe different changes.

Keep the care routine simple

Dry and store silver according to its maker’s advice, and keep individual pieces from rubbing together. If the remaining mark is unfamiliar, ask a jeweller what it is before trying a stronger product. A persistent mark does not necessarily mean the cleaning cycle was too short.
