How to choose an ultrasonic jewellery cleaner

The right ultrasonic jewellery cleaner is one that suits the pieces you actually own and comes with clear instructions. Start with your jewellery box, then compare appliances. A large specification number or a dramatic demonstration is not enough on its own.

1. Check that your jewellery is suitable

Make a short list: engagement ring, wedding band, necklace, earrings. Ask your jeweller which complete pieces can be cleaned ultrasonically, including any treatments, plating and setting concerns. If your collection is mostly pearls, delicate stones or unapproved plated jewellery, an ultrasonic cleaner may not be the right purchase.

Use our compatibility guide to prepare those questions. Do this before choosing a tank size or cycle length.

2. Compare usable tank dimensions

Capacity and fit are different. A volume in millilitres does not tell you whether a rigid bracelet fits through the opening or lies within the permitted water level. Compare the internal dimensions with the piece, allowing room for the loading method specified in the manual.

SONIQ Clean’s published tank dimensions are 150 × 130 × 46 mm, with a 700 ml capacity. Do not assume that an object can fill that entire volume: the fill marking and operating instructions still apply.

3. Understand the controls

Look for clear timing and straightforward start/stop controls. SONIQ Clean has 3-, 5- and 8-minute cycles. A longer option can be useful, but duration does not override material restrictions. An unsuitable piece is still unsuitable on the shortest setting.

If frequency comparisons are confusing, read how ultrasonic cleaning works. Frequency describes an aspect of the technology; it is not a standalone quality score.

4. Read the instructions before buying

You should be able to find guidance on filling, permitted cleaning liquids, loading, emptying and aftercare. Check whether any accessories shown are actually included. Look for clear product specifications and an accessible support route.

For a gift, include the care guidance with the cleaner. The recipient should know that compatibility is checked piece by piece, not simply by whether something looks like gold or a diamond.

5. Judge demonstrations carefully

Useful before-and-after comparisons keep the jewellery, lighting and camera angle consistent. A cloudy tank does not by itself tell you how much dirt came from the item or prove that another cleaning method failed. Look for a clear explanation of what was cleaned and how.
